Nasal

Polyps

Symptoms and Modern Treatment

Nasal polyps are benign growths of the nasal mucosa often associated with chronic rhinosinusitis. They can cause severe nasal obstruction, loss of smell, and frequent infections. Proper diagnosis and targeted treatment significantly improve the quality of life.

Definition

What are nasal polyps?

These are soft, painless growths that develop inside the nose or sinuses due to chronic inflammation.
They are not cancer and do not become malignant, but they can cause significant symptoms.

They are often part of the condition: Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP), which requires a specialized ENT approach to manage recurrence.

Causes & Risk Factors
1
Chronic Inflammation
Chronic rhinosinusitis and frequent upper respiratory tract infections.
2
Allergies & Asthma
Allergic rhinitis and asthma are closely linked to the development of nasal polyps.
3
Genetics & Intolerance
Genetic predisposition and aspirin intolerance (Samter’s Triad).
Clinical Presentation

What are the symptoms?

Persistently stuffy nose (nasal obstruction)

Runny nose (often clear discharge)

Loss or significant reduction of smell

Pressure or heaviness in the face

Persistent headaches

Nasal-sounding speech (hyponasality)

Frequent sinus infections (sinusitis)

Snoring and sleep disturbances

Medical Evaluation

Diagnosis & Indications

DIAGNOSIS & EXAMINATION

How are they diagnosed?

The diagnosis of nasal polyps is typically straightforward and reliable:

  • 1. Detailed History: Recording symptoms and duration.
  • 2. Nasal Endoscopy: Office visualization of polyps.
  • 3. CT Scan: Imaging of paranasal sinuses (if required).
  • 4. Comorbidities: Assessment for asthma or allergies.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP

Indications for an ENT visit

A specialized evaluation is required when:

  • The nose is persistently blocked
  • There is a reduction or loss of smell
  • Nasal sprays no longer provide relief
  • Recurring sinus infections occur
  • Symptoms last more than 10–12 weeks
TREATMENT OPTIONS

How are they treated?

CONSERVATIVE CARE

First-Line Therapy

The goal is to reduce inflammation and decrease the size of the polyps.

  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays
  • Saline nasal irrigations
  • Oral corticosteroids (in selected cases)
SURGICAL TREATMENT

FESS – Endoscopic Solution

When medical therapy is insufficient to control the symptoms.

  • Endoscopic polyp removal
  • No external incisions
  • Restoration of sinus ventilation
New Treatment

Biologic Agents

Specialized therapy for severe, refractory disease. They significantly reduce recurrence and polyp mass without the need for surgery.

What to expect after treatment
  • Significant improvement in nasal breathing
  • Recovery of smell (in a large percentage of patients)
  • Noticeable reduction in respiratory infections
  • Enhancement of sleep quality and daily well-being
Note: Systematic postoperative follow-up is required, as the nature of the disease may lead to recurrences.
